The Power Of A Small Group

When people meet to pray in a small group they feel supported and inspired by one another.  This is because Christ is present in a very special way: ‘Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in their midst.’

So it is not surprising that people report that they find the Abundance Prayer much more powerful in a small group.  This experience inspires them to make the prayer a constant habit in daily life.

1.      Having shared the Abundance Prayer with others, one can then set up a small group.  The group decides how often to meet, ideally, once a week.  For the sake of continuity and the convenience of those who may not always attend, it is best that place, day and time be always the same.

2.      Requirements:  three lighting candles, symbolizing the Trinity, on a small table placed in the middle of the room, surrounded by a circle of chairs, one for each member of the group.

3.      Sacred music is played for 10 to 15 minutes to help people to slow down and get into a receptive space.  The music is playing as people arrive, no greetings, no talking.

4.      The recording of the Abundance Prayer is then played (downloaded from the Internet), followed by 5 minutes silent meditation. This time may be lengthened gradually by the group to 20 minutes.  To come out of the meditation, leader/timekeeper says the Our Father slowly.

5.      Anyone who wishes the group to pray for a specific intention says briefly what the intention is, while the group hold it in the sacred space. A pause needs to follow each intention to give the group time to pray for the intention. When each person has been given time to make a request, the leader/timekeeper says the following slowly:

‘We hold the group in the sacred space, as well as the people and situations we are praying for. We picture Jesus and the light of his love filling everyone.  We feel the loving energy of Jesus flowing freely from our hearts, down through our arms and out through our hands, bringing healing and peace to each person, and a happy outcome to the situations we are praying for.'

Two minutes silence follows.

6.      People hold hands for a little while.  Leader concludes: ‘May each of us in the group become the person God created us to be, fully alive, fully human, at one with Christ in his love for the world.'
